Two Trees Views

Yesterday I revisited the local Two Trees Trail (33.985486479007655, -117.30617843524169) for the second time. The hike packs an intense 1,000-foot elevation gain into just 1.5 miles, rewarding the effort with sweeping panoramic views overlooking the University of California, Riverside campus. This area is part of the Box Springs Mountain Reserve, a protected preserve located between Riverside and Moreno Valley. The reserve features a network of steep, rocky trails that climb quickly from the valley floor. Its mix of chaparral, seasonal grasses, and exposed granite makes it one of the more rugged local hiking areas.

The trail briefly opens to unexpected winter color, standing out against the surrounding rocky, native terrain.

Sparse pockets of California sagebrush give way to lush green winter grasses across open, rolling terrain broken by stone and dirt trail.

As elevation increases, lush green winter grasses give way to dense stands of California sagebrush across the hillsides.

We are immediately rewarded with expansive views, as a dense cloud layer provides welcome protection from the Southern California sun.

Vader is clearly enjoying the morning climb, energized by the cool air and open views.

As we ascend, the trail winds up and around these massive granite boulders.

Granite boulders line the hillside, scattered almost like polka dots across the bright green slopes.

Vader navigates a brief section of technical climbing, handling the rocky terrain with ease.

At the summit, the trail opens up to wide views of rolling green hills, scattered granite boulders, and the UCR campus below.

Vader took a moment at the summit to soak it all in. Just a good view, a happy dog, and a reminder of why mornings like this are worth it.
